MUST BUY. Así de claro. Compra obligada.

We now have our hands on the major release of the year: *Barbarossa*! It covers Russian, German, Finnish, Romanian, and Hungarian forces on the Eastern Front from 1939–41. This is a massive release from Battlefront—a book spanning over 200 pages that details the armies of Russia, Finland, Poland, and Germany, including their history and military forces. Coverage for Romanian and Hungarian forces is provided digitally.

Purchasing the book unlocks the formations for all these nations within the *Forces* tool. It’s a "must-buy"—plain and simple. An essential purchase.

Below, I’ve included images of the book’s table of contents so you can see what’s inside. You can click on the images to enlarge them.

POLONIA

The first to see combat. Battlefront has already released this part of the book digitally, allowing you to take a look and build your lists. Below, you’ll find the Force, including its formations: three infantry/cavalry formations and one armored formation.

7PJ JW TANK PLATOON FORMATION

At the start of the war, Poland deployed two light tank battalions. These small armored vehicles—costing 19 points for a unit of 5—have very respectable stats; however, their 37mm gun, with an Anti-Tank (AT) rating of 6 and a Firepower (FP) rating of 4+, will struggle against heavy Russian tanks.

The 7PJ formation consists solely of an HQ and three tank platoons. This means that if you wish to field this formation, you are required to include at least three armored platoons, as it does not incorporate any infantry or artillery units.

FORMATION MOTORISED CAVALRY

The most comprehensive formations available to the Poles are found within their infantry. Poland fielded two motorized brigades that were supported by armored units. Giving up their horses was no easy transition, but these brigades were reorganized and equipped with mortar support, 37mm anti-tank guns, and even tankettes.

For 9 points, a motorized infantry platoon provides you with 7 stands—including one HMG team and one anti-tank rifle team—with the "fearless" and "veteran" special rules, and a "hit on 4+" rating.

FORMATION RIFLE COMPANY

The most comprehensive formation available to the Poles is the classic rifle company. The infantry platoons are supplemented by 37mm guns, HMGs, 81mm mortars, and 76mm artillery.

For 9 points, you get 13 stands that are "confident" (rally on a 3+), "trained," and hit on a 3+; note, however, that they are armed only with rifles—they don’t even carry MGs. It’s a large force, well-suited to contend with the sheer numbers of the Russians. Since the entire formation is hit on a 3+, you can expect to see a great many of these platoons on the table.

FORMATION CAVALRY REGIMENT

At the start of the war, Poland had 40 cavalry regiments. The course of the conflict would demonstrate the futility of maintaining such a large number of mounted troops in a world dominated by armored vehicles and aviation. They represented the elite of the Polish army.

Por 10 puntos tienes 10 peanas rifle y 2 rifles at, fearless, veteran, impactados a 3+. Y por 15 puntos, 14 rifles y 3 rifles at. Hay que pintar mucha caballería, sí. Pero es espectacular.

I mean, if you’re starting a Polish army, how could you not buy these magnificent miniatures? They’re just epic. For 10 points, you get 10 rifle stands and 2 anti-tank rifle stands—all *Fearless*, *Veteran*, and hit on a 3+. And for 15 points, you get 14 rifle stands and 3 anti-tank rifle stands. Sure, there’s a lot of cavalry to paint, but the result is spectacular.

SUPPORTS

We have two basic types of support available: light tanks and light armored vehicles—equipped with machine guns or light cannons—and various forms of artillery. Of particular note is the 76mm gun, which is lethal at 50cm and features a "quick-fire" capability (similar to that of the French); a battery of four such guns costs 16 points.

Furthermore, *Barbarossa* allows for the deployment of Polish armored trains, featuring a variety of carriage types and different armaments. A specific set of rules is provided for fielding them.

ALEMANIA

Hitler invaded the USSR on June 22, 1941, with 3.8 million men along a 2,900 km front. You can find the German forces below. They are based in part on the forces used in the invasion of France, but with new advancements in armor and weaponry. We have the same formations as those found in the *Blitzkrieg* book, though with specific details that set them apart.

Additionally, a new feature is the inclusion of Waffen-SS infantry formations, which played a significant role in the invasion. The German forces are listed below. A major new addition is the inclusion of allied units and formations from Romania, Hungary, Finland, and Italy.

Furthermore, the support section features many new units for both the *Heer* (regular army) and the Waffen-SS, as well as captured French tanks.

FORMATION PANZER III, PANZER 38T Y PANZER IV

The three formations have virtually the same organizational structure: an HQ and three tank platoons. This makes them all but unplayable, except in high-point games, due to the high cost of the tanks. The difference is that the Panzer IV formation allows for the inclusion of a Panzer II platoon, while the 38(t) formation allows for both a Panzer II platoon and a Panzer I platoon.

As weaponry evolves, the Germans improve their armor and guns, moving beyond the limited 37mm caliber.

The new 5cm-armed Panzer III features a respectable gun—with an Anti-Tank (AT) rating of 8 and a Firepower (FP) rating of 4+—along with an armor rating of 3. At nearly 10 points per tank—28 points for a platoon of three, or 38 for four—you can opt to increase the armor rating to 5 for an additional 4 points. This is a worthwhile investment, given that most Russian tanks have an AT rating of 7 and an FP rating of 4+.

The Panzer 38(t) also gets an armor upgrade to 4; for 26 points, you get 4 armored vehicles. Once again, you have a much better chance of holding off the Russian hordes with an armor value of 4, rather than the 2 found on the "early" version of the Panzer 38(t).

And the same goes for the Panzer IV—they’re just too expensive: armor 5, AT 7, FP 3+, at 47 points for all three Panzer IVs.

The StuGs have the same formation structure as in Blitzkrieg: three tank platoons, which—with a front armor value of 5—come to 14 points per tank.

As for the various infantry and mechanized formations, they are essentially the same as those in France; however, it is worth noting the introduction of the 5cm anti-tank gun into the infantry formations—with an AT of 9 and an FP of 4+, it will prove very useful against the Russian arsenal. The cost is 13 points for 3 guns. Furthermore, *Panzerjäger* (tank destroyers) are integrated into these formations, providing them with greater robustness.

Among the support options, the 7.62 cm guns stand out; for 11 points—with AT 11 and FP 3 (though classified as a "large gun")—they will certainly make Russian tankers think twice about facing them.

WILD CARD

The Dicker Max. Of the two produced, one saw combat alongside the 3rd Panzer Division. For 16 points, you get a formidable tank with Frontal Armor 3, the "Fearless Veteran" rating, and an AT 15, FP 2, "Slow Firing" gun—it’s sure to see a lot of play, especially for hunting down heavy Russian tanks.

WAFFEN SS

We have a complete Waffen SS infantry formation, featuring all the classics: infantry platoons, mortars, HMGs, guns, etc. Given that these troops are battle-hardened veterans, they come with the expected stats: Fearless, Veteran, and Careful. An 8-team infantry unit (including a mortar) costs 10 points, while a 10-team unit costs 12 points. At roughly 1 point per base—especially with those stats—they are highly playable and will likely see plenty of table time.

The remaining support options are slightly more expensive than those for the Heer, but they boast better characteristics (e.g., 14 points for three 5cm guns, 6 points for four HMGs, etc.).

Furthermore, they have access to their own unique support units—distinct from those of the Heer—including artillery, 88mm guns, Panzerjägers, and more, all specifically tailored for the Waffen SS.

Another new nationality for the Early War period. Quantity meets quality. The sheer heft of Russian hardware is reflected in some of the best-armored tanks of the Early War. Let’s take a look at them. Below, you’ll find the force composition: infantry, Russian tanks, as well as Lend-Lease vehicles—plus a wide array of artillery and guns, many of which will remain in service until the end of the war.

FORMATION T-26s, y BTs.

Let’s look at the armored formations. These units served as the backbone of the Soviet army during the 1930s and early 1940s. Their organizational structure—much like that of the BT series—consists of various types of T-26 tanks, supported by self-propelled artillery and anti-aircraft assets.

At 2.2 points per tank (5 tanks for 12 points, or 15 for 37), the T-26 offers a solid combination of gun and armor—even the T-26E, a more expensive variant with an armor rating of 3 (5 tanks for 15 points). This allows a Soviet player to field these small vehicles in large numbers. Their primary drawback is that they are "Reckless," meaning they are hit on a roll of 2+. While they remain "Fearless" when performing a counterattack or a "Follow Me" order, they are also subject to the "Purged" rule, which means they only recover (rally) on a roll of 5+. This reflects the impact of Stalin’s purges of the officer corps, which left the army with inexperienced leadership.

The BTs are practically the same, but with armor 2 and a movement of 25 cm, costing 1 point more per platoon compared to the T-26.

FORMATION T-34s, ¡SURPRISE¡

One of the best tanks of the war—if not the best—it is an absolute monster in the early game. Fielding it is practically unfeasible except in large-scale matches; at 14 points per tank, it boasts Armor 6, AT 8, FP 3+, a 30 cm range, and a Cross check of 3+. You can even equip it with more powerful guns.

FORMATION T-35 Y T-28

The first heavy tanks of the Russian army were the T-35s and T-28s.

The former, armed with multiple turrets and cannons—costing 9 points each—possesses the "Land Battleship" rule. This rule requires you to re-roll successful FP (Firepower) checks; furthermore, these tanks function similarly to Japanese tanks when it comes to being "bailed out," handling assaults, and so on. They can be very tough.

The T-28 is significantly cheaper, as it lacks that rule and carries only a single cannon. A unit of 4 tanks costs 17 points.

LEND AND LEASE

Western powers’ aid to Russia during the war manifested in many ways; one such instance—the Lend-Lease program—resulted in the arrival of heavy British tanks.

A single unit type—the "Valentine" class—encompasses these armored behemoths (with armor ratings of 6 and 7); the Valentine tanks cost 11 points, while the Matilda IIs cost 14.

FORMATION RIFLE BATTALION

Russian infantry formations will be very numerous. However, Russian players might not like this: rifle or motorized platoons have a 4+ save.

Within these infantry formations, there is a wide variety of support options. The basic profile is "Confident" (8+ check, or "Fearless" with a commissar), "Green" (4+ for assaults), and "Aggressive" (hit on a 3+). You get 20 stands for 13 points, or 29 stands for 18 points. Russian players will need to field dozens of infantry teams.

The artillery is "Green," just as it was in the Mid-war period, which will make it difficult to successfully "range in."

FORMATION CAVALRY SQUADRON

Conversely, the Cossacks have a 3+ save. You can field 14 cavalry bases for 11 points, or 18 bases for 14 points. They can also include the iconic and charismatic *tachanka*—for 6 points, you get to deploy 8 of them. One way to play with Russians who have a 3+ save is to use this cavalry formation—not only when they are mounted, but also when they dismount.

FORMATION RIFLE BATTALION

The final infantry formation is the Rifle Battalion. Its units follow a structure similar to those of the Motor Battalion, though they include, for instance, SMG platoons—21 bases for 14 points, or 32 for 20 points! Quality through quantity.

SUPPORT UNITS y WILD CARDS

In this section, we find the heaviest monsters of the war thus far. The KV-1E has been fitted with additional armor plating, making it even more impenetrable than it already was. At 29 points for a single tank, it is nearly unstoppable for opposing forces—provided the Russian player manages to neutralize threats like *Bunkerflaks*, 88mm guns, or the *Dicker Max*.

The same applies to the KV-1 (both variants mount powerful 76mm guns) and the KV-2 (equipped with a high-caliber, high-firepower gun). While they are expensive in terms of points—you could field just one if you wished—they are lethal in an assault, boasting a Top Armor value of 2 and a Counterattack rating of 2+.

You will see plenty of BA-10s (as was already the case in the Mid and Late war periods); at 6 points for a unit of three, each armed with a 37mm gun, they put German reconnaissance and *Spearhead* units to shame—the latter being far too expensive and typically limited to just 2–3 vehicles. As for guns and artillery, there is a vast and diverse array available; many of these pieces will remain relevant until the end of the war, featuring anti-tank capabilities so potent that no German tank can withstand them.

FUERZAS FINLANDESAS

The Finns had already entered into war against the USSR during the Winter War of 1939, and when Germany invaded the USSR in 1941, they joined the German side. They were highly experienced combatants—battle-hardened infantry troops—though they possessed only a small number of tanks, all of which had been captured from the Russians.

You can find the force list below. It consists of three infantry formations and one tank formation. If you already play with a Finnish force in the Late or Mid-war periods, you can use almost your entire existing collection. If you don’t—but happen to like the Finns—this is an opportunity you shouldn’t pass up, as nearly everything you purchase now will remain useful for the later stages of the war.

INFANTRY FORMATIONS

There are two formations, which are very similar to each other: the infantry formation and the light infantry formation (representing more experienced and better-motivated forces). For 8 and 9 points respectively, you get 9 bases that hit on a 4+. The SMG platoons in the light infantry formation cost one point more, but they hit on a 3+.

SKY SISSI GUERRILLA

The most seasoned and motivated troops were the Sissi, stationed in the forests and swamps along the Russian border; they possess the "Motti Ambush" rule, which allows them to appear in the opponent's deployment zone—though they cannot launch an assault the moment they arrive (at a +5 roll).

FORMATION T-26s

The final formation consists of captured Russian tanks, as the Finns had virtually no armored forces of their own. The venerable T-26s remained in service until the end of the war. Alongside them are the BTs, T-34s (1), and T-28s (2). A unit of 5 T-26s costs 16 points, while in the "Early" period, the formidable T-34s cost 24 points.

As a "wild card" option, the Finns can also field a KV-1 (captured back in '41); for 31 points, it provides a beast of a tank with an armor rating of 7 and a 76mm gun (AT 8, FP 3+).

COMMAND CARDS.

Then there are the command cards, which are numerous and varied. For instance, I can think of the option to use Molotov cocktails and *Panzerknackers*—giving infantry an AT 3, FP 1+ rating in assaults—as well as a wide array of infantry formations (the Russians, incidentally, still lack infantry that saves on a 3+, with the exception of a single support platoon), numerous "warrior" units, and so on.

All in all, this is a major release—an essential pickup if you play, or intend to play, the "Early War" period, given the sheer scale of the forces involved in the conflict. We also have the Romanians and Hungarians still to come; as I mentioned, they will be released in a digital format.
